Kings Cross Redevelopment

Exciting modernisation work is taking place behind the hoardings at Kings Cross to provide you with a larger, modern station with more space and new facilities.

Over the recent Christmas holidays most of the work on the new platform 0, which is next to the existing platform 1, was completed. Final commissioning work to bring this platform into use is expected over the Easter holidays providing extra platform space from May to allow the rest of the station refurbishment programme to take place. Once platform 0 is in use, the other platforms will be closed on a rolling basis whilst the refurbishment takes place.

Between Kings Cross station and St Pancras International a new concourse is taking shape and you should be able to see the new roof starting to appear above the hoardings from May. This will provide a large new concourse with enhanced passenger facilities.

Completion of the new concourse will allow the current temporary facilities to be removed and designs are being finalised for a new ‘Kings Cross Square’ an outdoor public space in the heart of the capital.

But that’s not all, next time you visit Kings Cross look up and you will notice the scaffolding which is hiding the engineers who are busy refurbishing the roof. 12,500 square metres of special laminated glazing, 5,700 square metres of Welsh Slate, and 2,500 square metres of photovoltaic panels are being installed. They have even constructed their own railway line on the roof so the work can progress without affecting the station.

Other out of sight project provides enhanced staff facilities and a new service yard. Work is also underway on the suburban platforms 9 to 11, which are not normally used by Grand Central, and an enhanced taxi pickup area is planned.
